As an interior designer, one of the most exciting parts of my job is navigating the vast landscape of design styles. From the warm and inviting New Mediterranean to the sleek and timeless Mid-Century Modern, each style carries its unique charm and personality. In this blog post, I’ll share how I differentiate between these popular design styles and guide clients towards making a choice that reflects their tastes and lifestyle.

New Mediterranean

This style is ideal for those who love the warmth of the sun-soaked Mediterranean region but want to incorporate a contemporary twist. The New Mediterranean style combines earthy tones with natural materials like terracotta, wicker, and dark wood. It also includes arches and curves reminiscent of traditional Mediterranean architecture.

When choosing this style, I look at the client’s affinity towards organic textures, bold geometric patterns, and a palette inspired by nature—think olive greens, azure blues, and sandy beiges.

Mid-Century Modern

Mid-Century Modern is perfect for those who appreciate simplicity and functionality. This style, which emerged in the mid-20th century, features clean lines, gentle organic curves, and a mix of different materials.

Key elements include slim, leggy furniture—often in teak—statement lighting and classic pieces like the Eames chair. If a client leans towards a retro aesthetic but wants a modern touch, this style is an excellent choice.

The Industrial style is characterized by raw, unfinished elements that give a space a warehouse-like feel. Think exposed brick walls, metal light fixtures, and reclaimed wood furniture.

This style suits those who aren’t afraid of showcasing structural elements and prefer a rugged charm over polished aesthetics. It’s about celebrating the building’s original details and adding a mix of vintage and modern furniture.

Modern Coastal

For those who love the beach but want to avoid a clichéd nautical theme, Modern Coastal is the way to go. This style blends the relaxed vibe of coastal design with modern minimalism.

The color palette is dominated by whites and blues, with pops of sandy neutrals. Materials like rattan, linen, and jute add texture, while accessories are kept minimal and inspired by the sea. I recommend this style to clients who want to create a serene, light-filled space that feels like a beach house.

Transitional style is for those who find a balance between traditional elegance and contemporary design. It combines the comfort and warmth of traditional design with the clean lines and neutral color palette of contemporary style.

Key elements include classic furniture shapes, minimal accessories, and a soothing color scheme. This style is perfect for clients who love the timeless appeal of traditional design but want to keep the look fresh and updated.

Rustic Modern

Rustic Modern aesthetic – a style that brilliantly merges the old-world charm with contemporary sensibilities. This design style is characterized by a warm, natural look featuring raw and often unfinished elements, including wood and stone. The modern aspect comes into play with clean, crisp lines, minimalistic décor, and a neutral color palette. It’s the perfect balance between rugged and refined. Opting for Rustic Modern means embracing a sense of simplicity and sophistication whilst still maintaining a connection to nature.

Contemporary design is all about the here and now. It involves clean lines, open spaces, and a minimalist approach. While it may seem similar to modern design, contemporary style often incorporates curves and embraces more flexibility—it can include elements from other styles that are currently in vogue.

Choosing an interior design style is a personal journey. It’s about understanding your preferences, lifestyle, and the mood you want to create in your space. As an interior designer, my role is to guide you through these styles, understand your needs and desires, and help you choose a design style that truly feels like home. Remember, it’s not about strictly adhering to a particular style but about creating a space that reflects your unique personality and taste.
