Many clients have shared how they find it difficult to have a home they love that is also a friendly and welcoming environment for their little ones. As someone who owns my own interior design business and has a young child at home, I know how challenging it can feel but I am happy to tell you that creating a home that both you and your kids can enjoy is easier than you think! And you certainly don’t need to sacrifice design or style to create a safe, fun, and comfortable environment for the entire family.

Here are some tips to help you achieve this balance and with a little creativity and planning, the kid friendly home of your dreams is within reach!

Choose Durable and Stain-Resistant Fabrics

Look for furniture upholstered in durable and stain-resistant fabrics such as leather or microfiber. These materials are easy to clean and maintain, making them ideal for a home with kids.

Opt for Washable Rugs and Curtains

Choose washable area rugs and curtains that can be easily cleaned in case of spills or accidents. Avoid rugs with long fibers or shag, as they can be difficult to clean.

Incorporate Storage Solutions

Storage is key to keeping a kid-friendly home organized and clutter-free. Look for furniture pieces with built-in storage, such as ottomans, coffee tables, or bookshelves. Use decorative bins and baskets to organize toys and other items.

Create a Kid-Friendly Zone

Designate a specific area in your home for your kids to play and relax. This can be a playroom, a corner in the living room, or even an outdoor space. Make sure this area is safe and equipped with age-appropriate toys and activities.

Incorporate Fun and Playful Décor

Add a touch of whimsy and fun to your home with playful décor such as colorful wall art, playful throw pillows, and fun lighting fixtures. These accents will make your home feel more inviting to the little ones.

Don’t be afraid of color!

Lights and neutral colors will easily show stains. So, don’t be afraid to add bold and vibrant colors that can withstand wear and tear.  These may be great for a sofa or chair. Something that your children will certainly jump, climb, and possibly drink on!

By incorporating these tips, you can create a stylish and kid-friendly home that is both functional and beautiful. Remember to balance your personal style and design preferences with the needs of your family. I am always here to help you with choosing the perfect pieces for your family!
